2008 Alfa Romeo National ConventionPre-Convention Fangio TourJoin us when we leave from the Oakbrook Hills Marriott Resort at 10:00 am on Sunday, June 15th and head west toward the Mississippi. We'll drive part of the first national road, the Lincoln Highway, and have lunch when we reach the mighty Miss. Picking up the Great River Road, we'll head north to Dubuque and back to Galena for dinner and our first night’s sleep. The town’s history, winery and shops offer many entertainment opportunities for a memorable stay - you could even see a ghost. On the third day, a late start will give us the opportunity to explore area attractions such as House on the Rock, Taliesin, or the Pendarvis Cornish Restoration. The afternoon drive will take us to the Swiss village of New Glarus for lunch, and on to the Illinois Railway Museum for a short tour. The final leg of the tour will bring us back to Oakbrook on Tuesday evening, in time for cocktails. This preliminary schedule is subject to change or substitution as circumstances dictate. Cost is $50/car, which includes a route book, info on attractions and some special mementos. Not included is the cost of hotels, meals, admission fees, fuel or anything not mentioned (including unmentionables). Participants must make their own hotel reservations - call the two hotels listed, ask for the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club group rate, and reserve with a credit card. There are many other hotels nearby if you prefer, but it's up to you to book something. We will select places to dine together, but you are free to seek out cuisine more suitable to your palate. The second day, guided by Iowa's tourmeister John Swanson, we’ll head back into Iowa to continue along the Mississippi, rising above bluffs toward picturesque vistas and Pike's Peak (the real one). Many noteworthy, but little known, sights and places are in this area, such as the "Field of Dreams". Also, there are caverns, casinos, and locks and dams on the river. We'll cross back over the Mississippi into Wisconsin, and make our way over rural, but fine, roads to Dodgeville for a night at the well-known, but quirky, Don Q Inn. Join us for a group dinner, or explore on your own if you prefer.
