2008 Alfa Romeo National Convention

Lake Shore Drive Tour

One of the challenges presented by having a car club convention in a major metropolitan area is putting together driving events. For all their attractions, cities = traffic. Endless stoplights and traffic jams don’t make for a fun day behind the wheel! But for this year’s AROC convention, we’ve put together a tour that takes in some of the most striking cityscapes in the world, and will still provide for mostly unimpeded cruising.

The Chicago lakefront presents one of the most beautiful urban panoramas anywhere. How better to take it in than from behind the wheel of an Alfa, motoring up one of the world’s most renowned highways?

Thanks to the unique geography of Chicago, we have the opportunity to hold a practical driving event right in the city. To minimize traffic, we will leave early in the morning on Sunday and take the expressway right into downtown Chicago. Our cavalcade of Alfas will cruise down famous Lake Shore Drive, south along the lake to Jackson Park and the Museum of Science and Industry, and past the start/finish line of the first auto race ever held in the United States, on Thanksgiving day, 1895! Then, north against Chicago’s striking lakefront skyline, past Navy Pier, Oak Street Beach, and Lincoln Park. Finally, as we head back to the hotel, the snarl of Alfa motors will resonate beneath the city as we traverse the Loop via Lower Wacker Drive! We’ll be back in time for the Awards Brunch.
